I'm writing songs I'm righting wrongs I'm writing all night About getting right About love at first sight I'm writing a tune About Johnny and June When love begun No shade from the sun How your heart was won When you found the One I'm writing words That my heart referred Break from the herd From the absurd Free as a bird I'm writing rhymes About happier times Bout being in her arms And falling for her charms And ignoring all alarms I'm writing prose Bout where time goes When your love's by your side and there's no need to hide cause you won't be denied Let love be your guide I'm writing words That my heart referred Break from the herd From the absurd Free as a bird

Well I sure love this guitar She never let me down She knows I'll never be a star She never makes me frown I take her to the bar Yeah I take her downtown Like me she has many a scar Like me she's still around She's here when I pour my sorrows Tells me there's always tomorrow And when she's alive in my hands I know we'll always be best friends Well I sure love this guitar On the nights that I could drown When I drink whiskey by the jar And my soul is all brown She knows she won't be too far When you're wearing your wedding gown And when you slam the door on the car And take your love to town Well I sure love me this guitar I'm flat on the ground I'm happy she made me her star When she got me at the lost and found

They showed me the apple, I took a big ole bite Walked to the chapel, the day was clear and bright Can you hear the angels singing in the sky Oh I can hear the angels but can they hear me cry? There's a poison in my gut it's growing every day The doctors want to cut but they only know their way I still wanna dance and sing until I'm out of breath You know you gotta take a stance even when you smell like death Come on show me the way to the shore Give me another day to hear the ocean roar Oh help me my brother and spread my wings Hand me a guitar with fresh new strings There's a gun in the drawer, they call it "the fresh start" But when you close that door there's no change of heart Would I meet my maker or would I roast in hell? Should I be a risk taker or wait for the final bell?

There's a boat lost at sea I think our love's on it Drifting away, you see But she don't care one bit With water on all sides And an emptiness within She won't fight the tides Or for the cleansing of her sins It's like we never were She'll leave it all behind It was all just a blur Makes her no never mind Makes her no never mind There's a coffin on the ground And a pile of dirt nearby Soon they'll lower it down But her eyes are clear and dry The priest reads from the Book Words of solace for the heart She just gives him a look We've never been so far apart Bm Well I can't live like that G Pretend that Love is dead Bm My heart beat is not flat A My love's still bleeding red

Those who wake up are the nightmare of those still asleep Those who wake up are not afraid that the price is too steep They think, they research and sometimes they're wrong One thing they don't do is blindly belong They know that if they keep using their brain They've got nothing to lose and everything to gain Those who wake up are the nightmare of those still asleep Those who wake up don't have to live their lives like sheep They value the process of using their mind They're never afraid to be left behind They know that truth lives in their thoughts And in the willingness to connect all the dots So think for yourself Put your old ways on a shelf Yeah think, don't be scared Don't live your life unprepared Those who wake up are the nightmare of those still asleep Those who wake up don't wanna live a life on the cheap They got books to read, ideas to refute But they don't have a need to just follow suit They don't wanna be told how to think They're free to change their mind every time they blink

D A Driving cross country in a Cadillac Bm G The top is down and there's no turning back 8-track tapes and a full tank of gas Dreaming of whiskey in a heavy shot glass Headed for Lansing, be there by morning The boy in blue only gave me a warning He said watch that speed keep it under the limit I actually obeyed but just for a minute D E Cause I left it all behind G D My life, my love my peace of mind D E I left a note, unsigned G A D When I left it all behind I can feel the blood dying in my veins I can feel the tightening of the chains But I gotta drive just another mile Drive away from her smile It's big and bold and full of life Who knows, she coulda been my wife But some things aren't meant to be Some things aren't meant for me D E Cause I left it all behind G D My life, my love my peace of mind D E I left a note, unsigned G A D When I left it all behind

A E It's a raised middle finger kinda day F#m D E I guess they can't all go my way I'm gonna tell my boss all the things I know I shouldn't say Then I'm gonna go home, grab a guitar and play I'm gonna play me a Waylon song like there's nothing wrong If you wanna play along We'll be twice as strong It's been a raised middle finger kinda week I never knew my life could be so bleak I don't own a boat, but if I did it'd spring a leak I guess I'm just tired of turning the other cheek I'm gonna play me a Waylon song like there's nothing wrong If you wanna play along We'll be twice as strong It's a raised middle finger kinda year So i might as well have me another beer The good news is that I have nothing left to fear So the end of the hard times is near I'm gonna play me a Waylon song like there's nothing wrong If you wanna play along We'll be twice as strong My firneship with him will last until I die. And if he outlives me, I hope he'll still think of me as a good friend.

Never alone 05:03
There are trips you take and there are trips that take you The bigger the lie, the more it's true Nothing in the trunk, nothing to my name But a vague memory sprinkled with your shame Sleepy dreamless nights spent in the backseat Curled up with my thought of escaping the heat Looking at the stars and wondering which one Will be the last one I see when it's all said and done But I'm never alone My guilt is my friend and it sits on my throne Up early the next day, the road is calling When you face your destiny there's no stalling It's all about salvation about redeeming my soul As I keep on driving clear cross the dust bowl I see a lot of people but I don't meet anyone I'm just driving down the road till I run out of sun Mile after mile, town after town Just keeping my head straight and the hammer down But I'm never alone My guilt is my friend and it sits on my throne Haven't had a drink in a month of Sundays Trying to stay clear from my own evil ways A day will come again when I can sip a few But for now I have a lease on life to renew Born again this morning I'll be dead by sunset All covered in sin and a cold, cold sweat One more day of driving in my stolen Cadillac And I'll close my eyes on this world of black. But I'm never alone My guilt is my friend and it sits on my throne The preacher tipped me back and the river took me in I am clear of all guilt, i am clean of all sin I might stick around and make a few friends Yeah I might stick around and make my amends But I'm never alone The Lord is my friend and He sits on my throne
