about

Inspired by my grand father's actions during WWII and my interactions with him as he was raising me, this song is really about all those who put their lives in danger to protect their country - and is an open plea that such sacrifices never be asked of them or anyone else again.

lyrics

There’s a bunch of medals on his chest
He said I was a lucky man but I wasn’t the best
We fought till they died on that beach
With a dream of going home seemingly out of reach

How fast we forget, how slowly we learn
This ain’t over yet they got more ammo to burn

There’s a bunch of shrapnel in his arm
He came home to work on the family farm
He’s got dreams that would scare a hundred men

And he dreams them over and over again

How fast we forget, clawing our way to the top
This ain’t over yet they got more bombs to drop

And he cried in his beer on the night when he hears
The cries of his brothers, the cries of their mothers

There’s a bunch of old men gathered round a flag
They all miss a brother who came home in a bag
But they stand at attention, their gaze hard as steel
With a pain in their heart that’s so hard to conceal

How fast we forget about those left behind
It’s like rulers, in war, find their own peace of mind
How fast we forget about those left behind
It ain’t over yet we musta lost our mind

There’s a bunch of medals on his chest
He said I was a lucky man but I wasn’t the best
